K9 Influenza virus is spreading
rapidly!
Is your dog protected?
* We now have the K9 Influenza
vaccine
* K9 influenza is a fairly new &
highly contagious viral disease
that spreads quickly among dogs
* It affects a dog's respiratory
system & can cause serious
illness, even death
* Dog's must be at least 8 weeks
of age or older to receive the
vaccine which is given initially
in
2 doses (4 weeks apart)
& then as an annual vaccination.
* The virus is spreading quickly
across the country
* Since this is a new disease,
dogs have no natural immunity
from the virus
* There has been a recent
outbreak in San Antonio,
reported cases in Houston, & a
confirmed case in Mid
Jefferson County (postmortem
exam)
* Dogs of any age or breed can
get the disease
* Similar to human flu, the
disease is spread when dogs come
into contact with infected dogs,
food/water bowls, even your clothing that may have been
near a dog that has been exposed
to the disease.
* an infected dog can blow
airborne particles (coughing or
sneezing) as far away as 25 ft
* Dogs that do not show signs of
K9 flu can still spread the
virus
* Vaccinating your dog can
reduce the spread of infection,
help to prevent infection,
reduce
common
symptoms, & reduce the risk of developing
more severe disease such as
pneumonia

Winter has arrived
(well, on the calender
it has)
Below, you will find
some tips that will help
ensure that you and your
pet/pets
will have a fun
& safe Winter
season.

- Keep your vet's number on hand. If you're travelling, research and then write down a list of local vet clinics just in
case you need them.
- Going on holidays? Research pet-friendly lodgings well in advance and book a room.
This will ensure that both you and your pet have a safe place to stay.
Visit www.petfriendly.ca for hotels, motels, cottages, and resorts that allow pets.
- Make sure your dog is always wearing visible up-to-date identification in the form of a collar & ID tag.
A microchip and/or tattoo is also helpful just in case the collar falls off.
Proper ID can make thedifference in bringing your pet home if you get separated.
*Cats and kittens like to nap on warm places, this can include car engines! Knock on the hood of your car or truck or honk the horn, then wait
a few minutes before starting the engine. If in doubt, open the hood and look.
*Antifreeze smells good and tastes very sweet, Very small amounts can kill your pet. If a cat walks through it and then licks its paws,
it can receive enough to cause serious damage or death. Thoroughly clean up any spills, store antifreeze in tightly closed containers and
store where pets and children can't get to them. Some companies are now manufacturing a non-toxic formula, so read the label or ask a
sales associate for the non-toxic formula.. Do not dispose of antifreeze by pouring into the gutter and never let your pet drink from the gutters
*Holiday food, Alcoholic beverages, candy, chocolate, turkey and fixings, pork , fish, bones, just to name a few hazards...keep your pet on its regular diet.
We see lots of dogs with vomiting and diarrhea right after Thanksgiving and Christmas, and some can become
seriously ill. Another food related hazard is the plastic six-pack beverage holders, kittens especially can become entangled in them. Cut them up before
putting into the garbage. This will also help the wildlife at the landfill too (especially birds).

Holiday Plants
Holly, Mistletoe, Lilies and Poinsettia can be particularly harmful to your pet. Eating Holly could produce nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. If a dog or cat eats Mistletoe, gastrointestinal upset and possibly even cardiovascular problems could result. All parts of Lilies (both Lilium and Hemerocallis species) are highly toxic to cats, with the potential to produce life-threatening kidney failure even from small ingestions. While the toxic potential of Poinsettia has been greatly exaggerated, mild stomach upset could still occur if ingested. Therefore, all of these plants should be kept out of your pet's reach. |
Grapes and Raisins
Ingestions of grapes and raisins have been associated with acute kidney failure in dogs. Some dogs initially develop vomiting and begin drinking large amounts of water, then subsequently develop diarrhea and life-threatening kidney failure. |

Don't be tempted by those cute little faces to feed your pet human foods that could cause them to become sick REMEMBER, A HEALTHY PET IS A HAPPY PET!

Did
you know that Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes "bite" &
transmit heartworms to both
outdoor & indoor pets!
Haven't YOU ever been bitten by a mosquito in your home?

Ask us which preventative will best suit your pet's needs.
We also have some newer & more effective products available!

CATS
+ HEARTWORMS = POSSIBLE SUDDEN DEATH !
Is your cat protected against heartworm
disease? Yes, cats can become infected with heartworms.

|
How common is this?
Common enough that your cat should be on a heartworm preventative:
We recommend year-round
heartworm prevention for all cats.
|
|
How can I tell if my cat has heartworms?
Unfortunately, the most common sign of heartworm disease in cats is
sudden death.
|
|
How do cats get this disease? My cats
are indoors. Do they also need preventive?
As with dogs, heartworms are transmitted to cats by mosquitoes.
Indoor cats are just as much at risk as
outdoor cats.
|
|
What are the preventatives?
Revolution® is a great all-around products approved for use in cats to
prevent heartworms & other parasites. These are topical
medications that are applied to the skin on the back of the neck monthly.
* Find out more information about each
of these products below. |
|

Does my cat really need this?
Yes. Heartworms
cause death. By giving your cat the prevention, you are saving his
life.

A veterinarian simply
injects a tiny microchip about the size of a grain of rice (12mm)
beneath the surface of your pet’s skin
between the
shoulder blades. The
process is similar to a routine shot, takes only a few seconds,
and your pet will not react any more
than he would to a vaccination. No
anesthetic is required. The microchip itself has no internal energy
source, so it will
last the life of your pet. It is read by passing a microchip scanner
over the pet's shoulder blades. The scanner emits
a low radiofrequency that
provides the power necessary to transmit the microchip's unique
code and positively
identify the pet. If your pet gets lost &
is taken to an animal shelter or veterinarian, they will
scan your pet to see
if it has a microchip &
read the unique code. This is the number used by HomeAgain to
identify the pet & retrieve
your contact information, which is used to contact you & reunite you with
your pet.
If you should move or change your
contact #'s be sure to give HomeAgain the new
information.
Ask us about having
your pet microchipped during his next
visit. Having this done
now could bring your
pet home later!
Remember during hurricane evacuations many pets could become frightened
by the new surroundings
& make a run for the nearest exit.

Healthy
Pets are Happy Pets!
We recommend that all pets be given a health
examination by a veterinarian on a
yearly basis.
It is important to vaccinate new pets and check for intestinal parasites,
especially if the pet is living in a home with children. Dogs and cats need to be started
on a monthly
heartworm & flea preventative, and routine dental care!

Caring for your pets teeth is an important part of
his or her health care.
Not doing so can lead to bad
breath, health problems such as abscess, and even more severe problems such as
heart disease.
The bacteria that grows in
your pet's mouth can be controlled by having your pet's teeth cleaned
on a regular basis and using
CET dental products that contain an antibacterial
enzyme that helps to control the growth of this deadly bacteria.
Call today to schedule a dental
cleaning for your canine OR feline friends!

*
Most
pets will require a wellness visit prior to
having a dental done*
PET OVERPOPULATION IS A PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!

|
Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S. - and each day 70,000
puppies and kittens
are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there
will never be enough homes for all the
animals. As a result, every year
4 to 6 million animals are euthanized because there are
no homes for
them.
What can you do to stop the
suffering?
"Spay & neuter your pets!"
Puppies & kittens can be
spayed & neutered as early as 4 months of age.

A Look
Through the Microscope
Here are
a few of the things that the doctors and technicians see when looking
through the microscope!
